Appeon Mobile 2.0 Beta

** Hot News **

Appeon Mobile 2.0 Beta1 Released!

Now deploy your PowerBuilder Classic applications on Android devices

Appeon Corporation is pleased to announce Appeon Mobile 2.0 Beta – Round 1 (V1) of testing is now available! In this release, the big feature announcement is for the support of  “Android” based devices. Now developers can easily and quickly build native Mobile apps from PowerBuilder with native device performance for cross- OS platforms, including Apple iOS and Google Android, without the hassle-free rewriting found in other vendors solutions!

Last year, Appeon built Appeon Mobile for iOS devices, which has now been tested by nearly 1,000 companies worldwide. This was Appeon's first step into the world of mobile and they were thrilled with the reception. Now, with these proven design patterns and framework features, from Appeon Mobile to support for Web on both major mobile platforms - it’s the perfect fit for building native cross-platform mobile apps with only one deployment.

Appeon encourages you to register for the beta program and evaluate this program for yourself. As an early adopter, you will not only have the opportunity to interact with Appeon engineers very closely but also influence what the final release will look like as well as the product roadmap. The future is full of possibilities, and we look forward to your success.

Appeon would also love to have a look at the apps you’ve created! Sharing your apps will help inspire other PowerBuilder developers and further the development of Appeon Mobile.

To get updates on Appeon beta news as well as training session, stay tuned to us via Appeon Beta Center.

Ok.  We successfully migrated a PB version 9 and 12.5 application to PB 15(32 bit) and compiled both applications.  Deployed both apps to a Windows 7 machine.  We are running our Unit test and there does not appear to be any issues yet.

I used the version 15 Text control files from PB 12.5 for the deployment.

So far so good.

PB 15 Beta - 64 Bit Classic Deployment

We migrated a PB 12.5 application to PB15.  No issues.  Then we compiled the app using the new 64 bit option.

Again we used the PB12.5 RTC files for the deployment.

We deployed the app to a Windows 8 machine and started testing.  As stated in the documentation, the RTE control does have a different appearance in the 64bit environment but we are not supposed to test this anyway. Also, for some reason the Help files will not open from within the application. Other than that, no issues yet.

We are testing with the 64 bit SQLAnywhere and the 64 bit MSSQL drivers. No problems yet.

CPBClogo_50.jpgappeon logo25.jpg

The North Carolina PowerBuilder User Group and Appeon, Inc. are proud to present the Charlotte PowerBuilder Conference (CPBC) to be held at the Center City Campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The CPBC brings together many of the top application and database developers from the SAP PowerBuilder world to Charlotte for a three day event to spur innovation, share insight, and foster collaboration. The conference will feature a mix of plenary and break-out sessions, in depth focus topic training, and product demonstrations with a focus on mobile application cross-over, bringing data to and from the cloud, current user engagement ideals, and refactoring older code.

As an added bonus, and as a tribute to the unparalleled rapid application development capabilities of PowerBuilder, an application 'Code Off' contest will also take place where development teams will be tasked with creating a usable application in only two hours. The winners will be determined by vote of the conference attendees.

Dates: March 5,6,7 2014

Submit a Proposal to Present at the Charlotte PowerBuilder Conference here

The conference will focus on mobile application cross-over, bringing data to and from the cloud, current user engagement ideals, and refactoring older code. We also aim to offer a variety of technical training issues geared towards intermediate PowerBuilder developers. If you have developed a class for in-house training, please consider sharing it with the community.

The deadline to submit a session for consideration is November 1, 2013. Acceptance notifications will be sent out mid-November.

Session length may be either 60, 90, or 120 minutes. Demo type presentations should be limited to sixty minutes; in depth technical discussions or detailed analysis/examples would be more appropriate for a 90 or 120 minute slot.

Sessions need to be educational and technically focused. Intermediate level topics are encouraged.

Speakers must be available to present during the entire span of the conference (March 5-7, 2014). We offer complimentary registration to the Charlotte PowerBuilder Conference to approved speakers. If you are selected as a presenter, your final presentation is due February 1, 2014.

I'd like to do an "issues only" release of PFC.

There are 22 items classified as issues as of today (just groomed them all)

Current Issues

I would greatly appreciate it, if you use the PFC, to go and vote/comment on any of these issues so that I can get a better feel for what we should be focusing on.

These are my notes from the PowerBuilder User Group meeting in Walldorf Germany on December 3, 2013, originally posted on my personal blog site.

Robyn Chan - Senior Vice President - Head of Mobile Platform

Michael Redford - PMP Business Information Technology, Products and Innovation

PowerBuilder 15

  • 32 and 64 bit support
  • OData
  • SQL 2012
  • Oracle 12
  • Windows 8
  • .Net 4.5
  • Dockable Windows

Beta builds are ready now, but access to it is still being figured out.

  • PB 15+
    • Open APIs eg objects like ORCA, IDE infrastructure/painter, build process
    • Hana XSE support for PowerScript ( XSE is their JavaScript like app server language)
    • HANA Cloud (HEC, Neo AWS) and on premise options
  • Evaluating
    • RDL (River Definition Language) support for PowerScript (intermediate layer, platform agnostic)
    • WebApp Toolkit for multi-channel development (internal name - not announced yet, web based IDE, AppDesigner, AppBuilder, the latter was developed by the PowerBuilder team to create mobile apps, SAP UI5 -- HTML5)
    • Client SDKs for NVOs - Typical PB app is 30% business logic in the client.  The audience thought it was a lot higher.

PowerBuilder.Net versus PowerBuilder Client

  • Looking at trying to get into one IDE

Plan to support JavaScript in IDE

  • Yes, that was what support for XSE was intended to convey

EAServer - what happened to NetWeaver integration

  • Couldn't put on slide - Looking at migrating PASP to Netweaver - probably wouldn't focus on other app servers

What about support contracts

  • That's one of the big questions they're working on.   The other is that existing SAP customers have an S-user account.  They're trying to figure out how to automatically give people S-user accounts so they can access the beta without going through the S-user creation process.

More good news, PowerBuilder 12.5 and 15 are now showing up in the SAP downloads area

Also, on Wednesday during the workshop there was a short demonstration of PowerBuilder 15.  I've included screenshots of the new Classic (which will likely be renamed to Native):

Finally, here's a shot of the attendees on the first day, quite a packed house.

Two PowerBuilder applications configured
directly for the web

Appeon is often used for switching a client/server application to web mode, where the user interface remains a GUI (Graphical Unit Interface). But, this is not the case when we use Appeon to create a new application: the interface then becomes web oriented (Web Unit Interface).
During this webinar, Pascale Dadone will demonstrate two applications that work within an existing web module, without being able to tell that these applications were built using PowerBuilder. We will see how to create an application that is visually orientated for the web in Appeon, but ergonomically very elaborate like your ‘classic’ client server applications. Please note, this webinar is in French.
